Meet The Onaping Falls Recreation Committee

BY DOLLY GORDON-ANDREWS

The Onaping Falls Recreation Committee (OFRC) was founded in 2013 with a goal to raise funds to keep the Levack Arena open. You may recall at this time the Greater City of Sudbury was threatening the closure of our I.J. Coady Memorial Arena. A group of local hockey families got together and saved our arena.

Over the past few years, the OFRC was involved with the Onaping Falls Minor Hockey League helping to build it to the successful, well-run machine that it has become. Fundraising for a Splash Pad in our community soon became a goal for the group and the Splash Pad became a reality at the grand opening in August of 2018.

You will also find the OFRC as the organizers of our Onaping Falls Winter Carnival, Onaping Falls Power Skating Program, local paint nights, The Northern Corner Run, The 2018 RCMP Musical Ride, New Years Eve Teen Dance, Breakfast with Santa, Scarecrow Building Contest, the OFRC Annual Golf Tournament, the Onaping Falls Choir, and Falls Fest.

In January of 2018, they changed their official mandate to raise funds through unique events and activities to see our recreational facilities thrive and all of our residents stay active and engaged. All monies raised stay in the community of Onaping Falls and go toward funding free events like Breakfast with Santa.

The benches and picnic tables you see at the Splash Pad were donated by the OFRC through funds raised at the RCMP Musical Ride, a donation from our Homecoming group LOHH and donations from families in memory of loved ones lost but never forgotten.

Upcoming events include the Scarecrow Contest (with the Leo Club), Breakfast with Santa (Dec. 2), Teen New Years Eve (Dec. 30) and of course our Winter Carnival on the first weekend in February.

Their newest project, with great thanks to the Onaping Falls Curling Club Executive, is a Youth Curling League. The program is slated to run every Sunday from November to March. Two age groups are being considered; 8-11 and 12-18 and will be open to any child living in the Greater City of Sudbury.
