Easy Ways to Go Green This Month

BY DANIKA LAVOIE

Despite the large amount of snow that is still present in our yards, Spring is finally here and April is all about everything green! April 22nd is Earth Day. We celebrate this day around the world to raise awareness on the importance of taking care of our planet. We do not need to wait for this specific date, however, to make valiant efforts to preserve Mother Earth. There are quite a few simple steps you can take in order to get involved.

First, why not volunteer to take part in one of the community clean-up programs that are usually held in spring? Second, rather than sending gently used items to the landfill, why not donate to a local organization that would gratefully accept slightly worn clothes, books, old toys, etc.

You can also take part in the Green Cart Program or prepare your own composting system at home to lower food waste. Even actions as straightforward as diminishing the use of single-use plastics (straws or water bottles), cutting down on our water usage or simply shutting off more lights that aren’t needed around the house, are small but effective ways to help the planet.

We have but one home and we need to do our part in keeping our environment healthy. So today, and every day, don’t be afraid to Reduce, Re-use, and Recycle!
