Bed Bug Prevention

BY SAMANTHA BRAZEAU-WILSON

This month, we’re focusing on bed bug prevention – an all too familiar experience I went through a few years ago. Naïve to the fact that my tidy apartment could get infested with bed bugs, it happened and I’m here to help ensure it doesn’t happen to you!

As unpleasant as it is to think about, bed bugs can invade the cleanest of houses and wreak havoc on your home. If you’ve recently travelled, purchased from a thrift shop or have hosted out-of-town guests, you could be at risk of some unexpected visitors. Here are some tips to prevent bed bugs from happening in your home.

Eliminate Clutter

Clutter provides an infinite number of hiding places for bed bugs and prevents pest control professionals from eliminating them should you ever develop a problem. Keep all areas of your home clutter-free – especially the bedroom.

Do Your Laundry

Heat is deadly to bed bugs which means if they’re living in your bed sheets or in that stinky pile of laundry, they’ll meet their demise as soon as you pop them in the washer or dryer. These pests and their eggs are killed by exposing them to temperatures of 120 F for at least 20 minutes, which is typical for a low-heat dryer setting.

Use a Mattress Protector

Mattress protectors are essential to not only preserving the longevity of your mattress but to protect it from critters like bed bugs. Some covers are specifically designed to encase your entire mattress and prevent bed bugs from nesting.

Call a Professional

Bed bugs can be very tiny and hard to see at first glance. If you discover them on your mattress or think you have bites on your skin, contact a professional immediately to inspect your home. These pests can be challenging to get rid of and spread quickly so the quicker you are to catch them the better.
