Local girl wins silver in national youth Remembrance poster contest

Ella Kurtis holds her national silver-winning poster between Royal Canadian Legion Branch 503 President John Getchell and Branch 503 Youth Education Chair Martha Cunningham Closs.

In partnership with schools across Canada and the Legion National Foundation, the Royal Canadian Legion promotes Remembrance and supports youth education through the annual poster and literary contests. Students in Grades 1 through 12 are invited to submit their creative works, focusing on Remembrance, through their local school to be entered into Legion Branch contests.

11-year-old Ella Kurtis of Levack entered her poster locally in 2020. Her poster journeyed to zone, district and provincial, winning at each level. The next stop was the Legion National Foundation in Ottawa, where her poster was judged nationally. She placed second, winning silver.

“Branch 503 is extremely proud to have Ella reach such a high ranking in the poster category,” said Youth Education Chair Martha Cunningham Closs. “We hope it encourages others to participate in the Legion Poster and Literary Contest.”

A formal presentation will be made at the Remembrance ceremonies on November 11.

Those interested in submitting a poster in the 2021 contest have until November 8 to do so. Contact your child’s school, Branch 503 or go to legion.ca to download an entry form.
